Early on in the NFL's free agency period, the Indianapolis Colts signed defensive end Arden Key. So what made the Colts an attractive destination for him?
In short, one big reason is the Colts' secondary.
"Really it was the back end and the D-line that was already here," Key said on Tuesday. "Back end is a talented back end. It's one of the most talented back ends I've been a part of. So we'll get that half a second hitch with those back end guys. So we'll definitely bring the quarterback down."
The Colts have what could be a top cornerback unit in the NFL, with Sauce Gardner and Charvarius Ward outside, along with Justin Walley at the nickel.
Then at safety is Cam Bynum, who brings versatility to the back end and impressive ball production.
From a pass rusher's perspective, as Key noted, strong play on the back end buys additional time for the defensive front to get home.
"A lot of impact," Key said of having a player like Gardner at cornerback. "I didn't realize how quick he was when I got here. Then I realized how quick he was, how tall he was to be that quick. He can cover so much ground in small seconds."
Key will be competing with Jaylahn Tuimoloau for the starting spot opposite of Laiatu Latu. Generating more consistent pressure on the quarterback will be a must this season for the Colts, and the secondary will play an important role in accomplishing that.
