It's a common occurrence to look at the MLB schedule on a Friday and see just one afternoon game.

If that's the case, it's usually the Chicago Cubs with a home game at Wrigley Field.

Almost the entire league has shifted to play Fridays at night. The Cubs, though, often play in the afternoon.

The start time is pretty standard: 1:20 p.m. CT (2:20 p.m. ET). And there's a reason for all of it.

Why do the Cubs play Friday afternoon games?

There is a city ordinance that is the main reason for this.

It prevents night games on Fridays, with limits traffic and noise in the evenings.

On Saturdays and Sundays, the Cubs can only play at night if a national network requests such a game.

At this point, there is an element of it that feels like tradition. The Cubs have played so many Friday afternoon home games that it feels totally normal.

Wrigley Field was also a long-time holdout as far as having lights for night games in general, so it feels more traditional in that sense, too.

But it's certainly a bit of a quirk. The demographic of the crowd would likely be different on a Friday night as opposed to on a Friday afternoon.

Given how tradition works, though, particularly in baseball -- it doesn't seem like this is something that will change anytime soon.
