If Byrnes softball is to repeat as SCHSL Class 5A Division 1 state champion, the Rebels will have to do it exactly the same way.

They’ll have to rebound from losing at home in the first game of a best-of-three series against Summerville.

Byrnes dropped the opener, 6-5, in 10 innings May 25 on a rainy evening that included a two-hour weather delay in the third inning. The Rebels (27-6) will try to stay alive 6 p.m. May 27 at Summerville (29-1) and force a deciding game May 29 at a neutral site.

BORN TO PLAY: Why Garrison Aiken was 'born to play' for Byrnes softball and its coach

In 2025, Byrnes lost the finals opener at home to a then undefeated Summerville team, fought back for a couple of one-run victories, and took a remarkable championship.

“We’ve been here before,” Byrnes coach Brandi Aiken said. “If anything, Summerville must realize that we beat them in Game 2 last year.”

That was the sixth state championship for Byrnes, first since 2021. In four of those, the Rebels lost the first game of the series.

“This time of year, we always walk about wanting to extend the season,” Aiken said. “We’ve got to win on Wednesday to extend it as far as it will go.”

Summerville took a 3-1 lead in the third inning on back-to-back RBI doubles separated by a lighting delay of 2:04.

Byrnes scored three times in the fifth for a 4-3 lead. Memorie Melton had an RBI single, and Haven Holmes and Addie Durrah drove in runs with doubles. Summerville tied it in the sixth and scored twice in the 10th.

“The third inning, we struggled to play in some of the heaviest rain,” Aiken said. “We’re not going to make excuses, but that could’ve gone differently.”

Another thing was runners left in scoring position. Byrnes stranded a runner on third base six times.

“They have a good pitcher,” Aiken said. “Obviously, I think we’ll be better at the plate the next time around.”
