The Toronto Blue Jays are focused on 2027.
They believe that even after their disappointing season, the organization should be able to contend next year.
That's why Toronto's front office was both a buyer and a seller.
They traded outfielder Daulton Varsho to the Houston Astros for right-hander Spencer Arrighetti, acquired utilityman Josh Smith from the Texas Rangers, and right-handed starting pitcher Jose Soriano from the Los Angeles Angels.
Soriano is Kevin Gausman's replacement after the longtime Blue Jay was dealt to the Chicago Cubs.
The 27-year-old won't reach free agency until after the 2028 season. Soriano has stretches when he looks unhittable. He began the season with 25.2 scoreless innings.
But there are faults to his game and a concerning injury history.

"Toronto will take a risk on Soriano’s injury history and strike-throwing ability. But he profiles as a solid back-end starter with a bit of upside who won’t break the bank in arbitration," The Athletic's Andy McCullough wrote.

In 123 innings this season, Soriano leads the AL with 57 walks permitted. His 4.2 BB/9 are identical to 2025.
Dating back to Soriano's time in the minors, he underwent two elbow surgeries, including Tommy John Surgery. Right arm fatigue cut his breakout season with the Angels short in 2024.
The Blue Jays hope that injury history is in the past for Soriano. If healthy, he will play a pivotal role in their rotation in 2027.
