INGLEWOOD, CA — Spain is on the board in the 2026 World Cup quarterfinals.
La Roja power struck first against Belgium on Friday, July 10, putting it through the net in the 29th minute to take the lead inside SoFi Stadium.
The attack had been inching toward getting a clean look, and the first score came off a deflection. Dani Olmo got a look inside the penalty box, and it was blocked by the Belgium defenders. However, Fabián Ruiz was in perfect position for the bounce, and he knocked it right in for the score.
It was the first goal of the World Cup for Ruiz.
Just one goal has done the trick for Spain throughout the tournament. It has yet to give up a goal, the only team to not concede a score. If that holds up, La Roja could be well on its way to reaching the semifinals for the first time since 2010.

The World Cup becomes a single-elimination tournament once the knockout stage begins. The 32 remaining teams have been placed into a bracket, and the field will halve itself during each ensuing round of the tournament until a winner is crowned.
The lone exception is that the two semifinal losers will play in a third-place game ahead of the World Cup final.
