MASON − Fans at the Lindner Family Tennis Center on Saturday, Aug. 15 saw an early shocker at the Cincinnati Open when Novak Djokovic was beaten in the Round of 64 by Thiago Agustin Tirante.

Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam winner, had previously reached the Cincinnati Open finals eight times, winning three Rookwood Cups. He was making his first appearance in Mason since defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the 2023 final in the longest match in tournament history (3 hours, 49 minutes).

What to know about Tirante, who is moving on to the Round of 32 at the Cincinnati Open.

Tirante is 25 years old and is from Argentina. He turned pro in 2016.

Tirante began the 2026 season ranked No. 102 on the ATP tour. Over the last eight months, he broken into the top 100 and climbed to a career-high No. 50 ranking heading into the Cincinnati Open.

Tirante is now 23-13 this season and his ATP1000 success continues. At such tournaments this year, he is 10-4, reaching the Round of 16 at the Canadian Open last week and the Italian Open in May

Tirante was making his first-ever appearance at the Cincinnati Open. It was also his first-ever match against Djokovic.

1st time since 2007 Novak Djokovic failed to win a Cincinnati Open match​


Djokovic was 45-12 all-time in the Cincinnati Open going into Saturday's match. This is the first time since 2007 he failed to win a main draw match in Mason. That year, he received a first-round bye before falling to Carlos Moya in the Round of 32.

Djokovic had reached at least the Round of 32 in every Cincinnati appearance accept his debut in 2005.
