Is New England Patriots linebacker Robert Spillane the most unsung player on the team’s roster?

According to NFL.com’s Gennaro Filice, Spillane is the most underappreciated player that the Patriots have due in part to his superb defense against the run.

”New England’s rush defense took a hit this offseason when nose tackle Khyiris Tonga signed with Kansas City, but the Patriots still employ one of the league’s best run-stuffers from the second level,” Filice said of Spillane’s prowess against opposing ground attacks. “With Spillane manning the middle of the defense, New England gave up the second-fewest rushing yards per game (87.7) through the first 12 weeks of the season.”

Spillane is a valued contributor for the Patriots, whose defensive instincts, agility and IQ helped New England reach the Super Bowl last season. The Illinois native recorded two interceptions and five passes defensed in 2025.

The Patriots have several players that fly under the radar, including Dre’Mont Jones, Craig Woodson and Mack Hollins. However, Spillane is perhaps the one player who goes underappreciated the most, for the added edge that he gives New England behind their front four.
