Bo Nix's awfully timed ankle injury has thrust Jarrett Stidham into starting quarterback duties for the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game. And with Stidham ascending to QB1, Sam Ehlinger takes his spot as Denver's backup.
Ehlinger has limited NFL experience but made three starts for the Indianapolis Colts in 2022. The former Texas star lost every game, completing 63.4% of his passes for 573 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. He added 87 yards on the ground and is mobile in the pocket, though his 6-foot-1 stature and arm talent leave a bit to be desired.
This year Ehlinger has bounced around from the Broncos' practice squad to the active roster. Indianapolis reportedly tried to lure him back after Daniel Jones' season-ending Achilles injury, but Ehlinger chose to stay with Denver and and noted quarterback guru Sean Payton. Ehlinger's choice led to Philip Rivers' remarkable comeback at age 44.
As for Stidham, he'll be taking on the team that drafted him in the New England Patriots. And while Stidham only has one more career start under his belt than Ehlinger, Payton clearly values him. Stidham won the backup job over former second overall pick Zach Wilson last year, and over the offseason Denver rewarded him with a two-year, $12 million deal -- premium money for a No. 2 QB.
No matter who's under center for Denver, the Patriots defense poses a massive challenge as it has smothered both Justin Herbert and C.J. Stroud this postseason.
