Why Broncos must dismiss any ideas of trading quarterback Jarrett Stidham originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Denver Broncos have real Super Bowl aspirations in 2026.
The team nearly made it to the Super Bowl last year and there are no signs that the team will take a step back this year. The team will face a challenging schedule, but after retaining nearly every key player from last year's run, the Broncos are planning another deep run.
How far the team goes will rest largely on the shoulders of quarterback Bo Nix. The Broncos fell short of the Super Bowl last year in large part due to Nix suffering a broken ankle in the divisional round, rendering him unable to play in the AFC Championship Game. We remember how hard that game was to watch.
The Broncos faced an upstart New England Patriots team that, much like the Broncos, was ahead of schedule by making it as far as they did. The weather played a huge factor in the game and the Patriots were able to make a couple more plays than the Broncos, who had to roll with Jarrett Stidham at quarterback.
I'm told the #Broncos are looking to bring in a veteran QB as a tryout player to rookie minicamp because they want a good arm to throw those 3 days to their rookies. Their three quarterbacks, Bo Nix, Jarrett Stidham and Sam Ehlinger, obviously aren't eligible for rookie minicamp.

This offseason, rumors have swirled that the Broncos would be willing to listen to trade offers for Stidham. The team may want to rethink that idea.
The Broncos need to keep Jarrett Stidham in-house
The Broncos don't have a strong enough situation at the quarterback position to make this move. Nix is scheduled to take part in training camp, but there seems to be at least a mild level of concern over his ankle becoming a lingering issue.
Stidham struggled mightily in the AFC Championship Game, which may have led to many fans jumping at the idea of the team trading him. He faced the majority of the blame for that defeat, but would Sam Ehlinger have played any better, given the circumstances? Maybe a better question would be, would any backup quarterback in the league have played better under those circumstances?
In the first half, before the blizzard arrived, he led the team on a pretty nice touchdown drive.
Stidham was thrust into the starting lineup with one week to get ready for a conference championship game after not making a start in over two years. Throw in the blizzard conditions, which came with nearly zero visibility on some plays, along with the fact that the team had next to no rushing attack, and you got the results that you got.

Stidham is still a serviceable backup who knows Sean Payton's system. On top of that, the team isn't going to get anything worthwhile for him in a trade. He will be in the final year of his contract and the team would be best served to hang onto him in the event Nix has a setback of any kind this coming season.
