When ESPN reported earlier this week that the Denver Broncos could listen to trade offers for backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham, we brushed it off as an unlikely scenario.

The Athletic has now added more smoke, suggesting that there might be fire behind the Stidham buzz.

"As the QB market plays out, trade targets remain in play for several teams," The Athletic's Dianna Russini tweeted on Wednesday. "I’m told teams have reached out to the Broncos about backup Jarrett Stidham."

This is a fascinating scenario because Denver clearly likes Stidham, he's been in coach Sean Payton's offense since 2023, and he has a great relationship with starting quarterback Bo Nix. Stidham is an established veteran with seven years of experience on his resume, and the Broncos would have to find a new QB2 if they trade him.

The team's third-string quarterback, Sam Ehlinger, is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent next week. If the team trades Stidham, Ehlinger could potentially be a candidate to re-sign as the new QB2. Ehlinger showed unusual loyalty to Denver last fall, turning down multiple active-roster opportunities to instead remain the Broncos' QB3.

Stidham has one year remaining on his contract, so Denver has a window to make a trade now. It remains to be seen what the QB could fetch in a trade, but one would think the Broncos would value Stidham more than a mere late-round pick.
