Miami Marlins right-handed pitcher Max Meyer had posted an impressive 2.63 ERA through four starts this season, with 27 strikeouts in 24 innings.
On Monday against the Cincinnati Reds, though, Meyer enjoyed what was easily his most impressive start as a big-leaguer, striking out 14 while scattering just five hits over six innings of work.
Meyer threw 92 pitches. His strikeout total was the highest for a starting pitcher against the Reds since Max Scherzer struck out 15 in 2019.
"Tough to execute any better than this youngster Meyer has done tonight," Fanduel Sports Network analyst Jeff Brantley said in the top of the 4th inning, after Meyer recorded his ninth strikeout of the game. "He's been on his game. Not missing in the middle of the plate since the first batter of the ballgame. … He's mixed it up about as good as you can ask for."
What to know about Meyer, who turned 26 years old in March:
The Marlins selected Meyer after the Detroit Tigers took Spencer Torkelson first overall, and the Baltimore Orioles drafted Heston Kjerstad second.
The Reds' first-round pick in 2020, Austin Hendrick, is playing this season at Double-A Chattanooga.
Meyer made his big-league debut in July 2022. He made just two starts that season before undergoing Tommy John surgery for a torn UCL.
Meyer missed the entire 2023 season. He made 11 starts in 2024, posting a 5.68 ERA and striking out 46 in 57 innings.
Meyer started once against the Reds in 2024, allowing six earned runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out two in four innings in an 8-2 loss at loanDepot park.
Tyler Stephenson homered off of Meyer in the 2nd inning of that game. Elly De La Cruz doubled twice off of Meyer.
Meyer opposed Reds starter Nick Lodolo in that game, just as he did Monday. Lodolo earned his ninth win of the season, allowing two earned runs on two hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in six innings.
As a freshman at University of Minnesota, Meyer was the Golden Gophers' closer.
He became a starter during his second of three seasons at Minnesota.
Meyer struck out 187 in 148 innings during his college career.
