And we're off!
The FIFA World Cup's round of 32 officially started with the match today between Canada and South Africa. Now that it's over, we have our first team to advance to the round of 16.
Although the match was scoreless through the first 90 minutes, a Canadian goal in stoppage time elevated them over South Africa for their first trip to the round of 16 in World Cup history.
After one game, one team is through to the round of 16. Additional teams will advance as games are played throughout the week.
The round of 16 begins Saturday, July 4 with two games. The first will feature the winners of the Germany and Paraguay game taking on the winners of the matchup between France and Sweden.
The other will see the winners of Canada-South Africa take on the winner between the Netherlands and Morocco.
