Many Pittsburgh Steelers fans have been wanting their team to draft a young quarterback since late-stage Ben Roethlisberger. After striking out on first-rounder Kenny Pickett in 2022, the Steelers are investing at QB again, though it's not the flashiest option.
The Steelers selected Penn State's Drew Allar in the third round of April's draft. Allar, once a highly touted prospect who struggled with inconsistency at State College, is making his NFL preseason debut tonight against the Green Bay Packers.
Several Steelers starters are expected to sit tonight, including 42-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers. That'll likely open the door for Mason Rudolph to start. Here's a look at the Steelers' depth chart at quarterback to get a sense of how the rest of the reps may shake out in tonight's game.
Allar is fourth on the depth chart, so he'll likely come in after the veteran Rudolph and 2025 sixth-rounder Howard get some time on the field. This is what we know about Allar.
A former five-star recruit out of Medina, Ohio, Allar arrived to Penn State with massive expectations. He didn't exactly deliver. Allar started three seasons but each was less memorable than the one preceding it. His sophomore campaign was efficient from a turnover perspective even though his accuracy was spotty, as he threw 25 touchdowns to only two interceptions over 13 games. Allar played only six games as a senior before suffering a season-ending ankle injury.
First-year coach Mike McCarthy recently praised Allar's ability even though he remains last on the depth chart.
"There has not been a day where he hasn't made a throw where you say, 'OK, that's a young man taking a step,'" McCarthy said, per Steelers.com's Brian Batko.
We'll see what Allar can do in an NFL uniform when the Steelers kick off their preseason tonight.
