If you follow the NFL Draft, you've likely heard a chime that goes off throughout the program.

What is that chime? It's a special sound that lets viewers know that a draft pick is ready to be announced.

But what is the origin of this sound, and who orchestrated it?

Who created the NFL Draft chime?

There's been different variations of the NFL Draft chime before the one we all know today. According to the New York Times, the chime first appeared in 2004 with the No. 2 pick.

A year later, it was adjusted to resemble the NYSE bell. Then-commissioner Paul Tagliabue announced Alex Smith as San Francisco’s top selection. However, neither version endured. Bob Christianson was tasked with creating a new chime to debut during the 2006 NFL Draft.

ESPN dropped a video explaining the origin of the famous chime:

Who was the first player to be called under the NFL Draft chime?

Roger Goodell, who was in his first year as commissioner, approached the podium with the Houston Texans holding the No. 1 pick. Goodell announced Mario Williams as the pick, but the music did not play. For whatever reason, the chime wasn’t played until the eighth pick. The announcement was about the Buffalo Bills selecting safety Donte Whitner, who marked the beginning of a new era for the catchy chime.
