The University of Texas has a long history of Olympic success. Current or former Longhorns have already won 16 medals in Milan. In fact, current or former Longhorns won 16 medals at the Paris games. Where does UT rank all-time?
The all-time leader in Olympic medals is USC. The Trojans, who field teams like men's volleyball and water polo, have 336 total medals in the history of the Olympics. Stanford is a close second at 300. As mentioned with the Directors' Cup, Stanford also has men's volleyball and water polo.
The second and third schools on the list are UCLA and Cal, both also play men's volleyball and water polo. When those teams win medals, it helps the schools on the Pacific Coast build medal count.
The first non-West Coast team? The Texas Longhorns. UT has won 155 medals all-time at the Olympics.
Texas' strength in the games is traditionally swimming and diving. Gary Hall Jr. and Aaron Peirsol have both won five golds in the pool. Rick Carey, Josh Davis, Brendan Hansen, Ian Crocker and Carrie Steinseifer are all swimmers that have won three gold medals. But it's more than just swimming.
Ryan Crouser might be the greatest shot putter all-time. The Texas EX is the first shot putter in history to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals (2016, 2020, 2024). He currently holds both the world and Olympic records.
Sanya Richards-Ross, a track star married to former Longhorns football great Aaron Ross, has five medals, four of them gold. And of course, Kevin Durant has four gold medals as a part of USA Basketball.
With UT's commitment to overall athletic excellence under athletic director Chris Del Conte, there are sure many more medals to come.
