BATON ROUGE – The Lane Kiffin effect continues.
Preseason hype and expectations from media members and talking heads alike have poured in for LSU football so far this offseason after Kiffin has taken over the program. LSU has been picked to finish third and fifth by coaches and media members from the SEC, respectively.
Now coaches from across the country are weighing in. The Tigers are opening the 2026 college football season ranked in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll, the first ranking to be released ahead of this season.

Despite ending the 2025 campaign 7-6 with a loss to Houston in the Texas Bowl, a coaching change and an overhaul of the team's roster, those around college football predict LSU to be one of the best teams in the country in year one with Kiffin.
The Tigers come in at No. 13 in the preseason coaches poll. They are the highest team in the preseason poll that finished last year unranked with the second highest being Penn State at No. 17.
LSU has six ranked teams on its 2026 schedule and half of them are ranked inside the top 10: No. 4 Texas, No. 8 Texas A&M, No. 10 Ole Miss, No. 11 Alabama, No. 18 Tennessee and No. 23 Clemson. For the second straight season, the Tigers will open the season with a marquee ranked matchup with Clemson (Sept. 5, 6:30 p.m. CT, ABC).
Kiffin and the Tigers are the seventh highest-ranked SEC team behind No. 3 Georgia, Texas, Texas A&M, No. 9 Oklahoma, Ole Miss and Alabama.
