Clemson baseball is trending in the wrong direction.
The Tigers (18-7 overall) were swept by Notre Dame over the weekend in South Bend, dropping Clemson to 1-5 in ACC play after two weekend series. Following a 15-1 start to the season that saw them climb to No. 9 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, Clemson has since lost six of its last nine games.
Coach Erik Bakich's team was outscored by an unranked Fighting Irish squad, 21-11, despite outhitting Notre Dame for the overall series. After being blanked 6-0 in Friday's series opener, Clemson had 12 hits on Saturday but blew a 7-5 lead and lost in walk-off fashion, 8-7.
Notre Dame (14-6, 6-3) jumped on Clemson early in Sunday's series finale and led 7-1 before the Tigers used a late push to get within striking distance in a 7-4 loss. The Tigers had 13 hits but left 12 runners on base. They left 27 on base in the three-game series sweep.
On Monday, the Tigers fell completely out of the Coaches Poll just two weeks after being ranked in the top 10. They received 29 votes for top 25 consideration, the second most of teams outside the rankings.
Since ACC play began with Clemson losing two of three to a top-5 Georgia Tech team, the Tigers' ERA has risen over a full point from a league-leading 2.17 to 3.23. The collective batting average has fallen from .316 to .299.
