Though the U.S. men's national team saw its World Cup run end on a lackluster performance in the Round of 16 against Belgium, Mauricio Pochettino did more than enough to earn the right to stay on as USMNT head coach.
And apparently, U.S. Soccer won't have to wait much longer for Pochettino's decision.
In his first stint as an international head coach since coming over from Chelsea, Pochettino had the USMNT playing an exciting brand of soccer that looked unrecognizable from previous U.S. World Cup squads.
The USMNT won three World Cup matches for the first time in program history. It won multiple matches by two-plus goals for the first time. It won a knockout stage game for the first time since 2002. The USMNT scored more goals in its opening match than it did in the entire 2022 World Cup. It scored more goals in this World Cup than it did in 2022 and 2014 combined.
Simply put, Pochettino gave the USMNT an identity and foundation to build on — even if the Belgium loss was a massive disappointment.
According to Fox Sports, the USSF had already offered Pochettino a contract extension to remain with the team through the 2030 World Cup cycle. His contract had expired after this World Cup in which he took over mid-cycle following Gregg Berhalter's firing.
From Pochettino himself, the decision is imminent.
Though most of the major club openings have already be filled, Pochettino would have plenty of interest if he were to decide to return to Europe and coach at the club level. The contract he is considering from the USMNT would be at least $24 million over four years, making him among the highest-paid coaches in international soccer.
Pochettino said via Fox:
He didn't give an indication as to which way he was leaning, but the USMNT has to like the potential of having Pochettino for a full cycle.
With the USMNT no longer automatically qualifying as a World Cup host, the next four years would have no shortage of competitive matches for this talent pool.
