When does Alabama high school football season start? Important dates to know in 2026

Don't look now, but football is around the corner, Alabamians.

The 2026-27 high school football season is less than two months from kicking off in the Yellowhammer State. Alabama is known as one of the premier states when it comes to prep football, as the state breathes the sport in support of Alabama and Auburn at the college level.

Preparation for the new season is well underway as we go through the summer months.

Here's what you need to know about when do teams return to action for the 2026 season, as well as all the dates to know:

Alabama high school football season start dates: AHSAA​

First practice date: Aug. 3, 2026

Date of first games: Aug. 20, 2026

High school football practices for teams competing within the AHSAA get underway on Aug. 3, 2026, with the date of the first games set for Aug. 27.

Teams that elect to participate in preseason kickoffs are permitted to do so in "Week 0" of the season, or during the week of Aug. 20.

Alabama high school football season start dates: AISA​

First practice date: July 27, 2026

Date of first games: Aug. 21, 2026

High school football practices for teams competing under the AISA umbrella get underway on July 27, 2026, with the date of the first games set for late August.
