The 2026 NBA Draft is finally upon us! This is an exciting one because it’s been heralded as one of the most exciting draft classes of this decade. Many are excited to see what happens with AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, and Cameron Boozer, among others. In this upcoming two-day event, many forget that it wasn’t always like this.
Why Did the NBA Change the Draft to a Two-Day Event?
For decades, the NBA Draft was a one-night event, but in 2024, it was expanded to two days. Adrian Wojnarowski, back when he worked for ESPN, gave the details for why the league decided to go this route.
It wasn’t a massive change, but it simply gave teams more time to consider who they would select. The first round’s time interval didn’t change; each team has been given 5 minutes since it began, and it always has been. (Note that they had months to evaluate all their prospects.) However, the second round’s time interval increased from 2 minutes to 4 minutes.
“Among the reasons for the expansion of the event, including the programming for television rights partners, the NBA and teams are hopeful that the hours between the first and second rounds will give more time to make trades and plan strategies for the second night. Teams have been frustrated with the chaotic speed of the second round and believe there could be more order in the process with a day between the rounds,” Wojnarowski wrote.
The NBA took inspiration from the NFL Draft, which is much longer and thus requires more days to complete. The NFL Draft has seven rounds, and even then, a fair number of the players that go undrafted wind up signing on training camp rosters.
In recent years, we have seen teams sign players to two-way contracts. A fair amount of the time, those players develop into something worthwhile. That’s why teams take second-round picks more seriously, even if they still are not valued nearly as much as first-round picks are.

Take note that some of the best players on the NBA’s most recent title teams were second-round picks. Nikola Jokić, who is also a three-time Most Valuable Player recipient, was the best player on the Denver Nuggets team that won the title in 2023. Jalen Brunson just led the New York Knicks to their first NBA title since 1973.
Some second-round picks haven’t necessarily been the best player on title teams but have been especially vital to NBA dynasties. Manu Ginobili helped the San Antonio Spurs win four titles in 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014, while Draymond Green helped the Golden State Warriors win four titles in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022.
The NBA is simply getting more talented, and because of that, the second round is getting taken more seriously, with more crucial players who pan out to be something special, hence justifying the draft taking two nights.
