Conor McGregor has a chance to prove his self-proclaimed claim to be UFC's "greatest featherweight of all time" when he steps into the octagon for the first time in five years to take on Max Holloway at UFC 329 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
McGregor (22-6) has lost his last two fights in the UFC, both by knockout to Dustin Poirier, months apart in 2021.
The 37-year-old McGregor hasn't fought at the featherweight limit of 145 pounds since 2015 and has already scored a victory at that weight against Holloway (27-9), winning a unanimous decision in 2013, in just his second UFC appearance. Saturday's fight will be in the welterweight division.
"That's why I love Max as an opponent. He has fought so many people," McGregor said about Holloway. "He has a very impressive body of work in the Octagon. He's a future Hall of Famer. Now, I get to showcase my level."
McGregor stepped into the Octagon for a rematch and the end of a trilogy of matches against Dustin Poirier in Las Vegas on July 10, 2021, as part of the UFC 264 card.
Poirier had scored a knockout in round 2 at UFC 257 in January in Abu Dhabi to avenge his first loss to McGregor back in 2014.
This time around, the crowd at T-Mobile Arena could barely get comfortable in their seats before the fight was over. In the lightweight battle, Poirier rocked McGregor with a punch, sending the "Notorious" one backward, where his leg buckled, and he fell to the ground. Poirier finished him off with a series of blows before the referee stopped the bout in the first round.
McGregor was stretchered out of the arena with a broken leg, not to return to the ring until this weekend.
