LEXINGTON — Kentucky football wasted no time hiring a new general manager.

Pat Biondo, who had served in the role since December, stepped down from the GM position Tuesday, July 28. One day later, the Wildcats' promoted assistant GM Pete Nochta to succeed Biondo.

During the program's media day Monday, Aug. 3, UK coach Will Stein was asked about Biondo's departure — and whether it was anticipated.

"Just like anything in life, the sun rose the next day and we put our best foot forward to continue to make Kentucky football the best it possibly can," Stein said. "Really excited about Pete and his opportunity and building our personnel department even more now."

Nochta, who attended Tates Creek High in Lexington, switched sides in the Governor's Cup rivalry: Before joining Kentucky's staff, he spent the last 10 seasons at rival Louisville. Nochta was the Cardinals' director of recruiting the past four years.

A former UofL tight end, Nochta was Stein's teammate while the latter was a Cards quarterback.

"I've known Pete since I was 18 years old," Stein said. "He's a Lexington guy, born and bred. ... Pete is somebody, when I initially got here, he was one of my first calls."

That confidence also is the reason Stein moved so quickly after Biondo left.

"Pete could be a GM across all of college football," Stein said. "He's very smart, he's extremely well organized and he played football. I think that's really important at the GM role."
