Literally, moments after the Patriots selected Will Campbell, the LSU left tackle made an interesting vow to his new quarterback Drake Maye.
“I’m gonna fight and die to protect (Maye) with everything I’ve got,” Campbell told NFL Network.
While Maye immediately responded on social media, saying he loved Campbell already, he expanded Thursday during his session with the media.
“Listening to it live ... it gets your juices flowing,” Maye said of the vow made by his new blindside protector. “It makes you want to go out and play football now.”
Campbell was the fourth overall selection in the first round. The Patriots have long tried to fill a hole and left tackle, and Campbell inherits the job.
“I’m pumped that we picked Will,” Maye said. “We had a chance to meet when he flew in on Friday. I’m pumped to get things going.”
Campbell, a team captain at LSU, was a first-team All-SEC in 2023 and 2024, and a consensus All-American.
There’s been plenty of debate whether his “short” arms will hinder him in the NFL, or prevent him from being an effective tackle.
The Patriots quarterback doesn’t seem to have much doubt.
“Obviously, he seems like a football player,” said Maye. “That’s what you want around here.”
LSU offensive line coach Brad Davis, speaking with MassLive earlier in the week, said the arm-length issue was moot in college. He anticipates Campbell being able to protect Maye just fine.
“I understand why the NFL utilizes measurables and historic data,” Davis said. “But this kid is special. He knows no limitations. He will be an exception to whatever rule they have.”
