UNC baseball’s Jason DeCaro was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the 80th overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft on Saturday, July 11.
DeCaro was the third Tar Heel to be selected after shortstop Jake Schaffner and outfielder Owen Hull were picked by the Boston Red Sox. A junior pitcher, DeCaro was the top starter across most of his three seasons in Chapel Hill. His projected slot value at No. 80 in the draft is $1.03 million.

DECARO: Jason DeCaro shines for UNC baseball in super regional win over USC
Here’s a breakdown of Jason DeCaro’s stats with the Tar Heels and what the Pirates organization can expect from him.
DeCaro wrapped up his career with the Tar Heels’ as the ace of the “arm barn,” logging an 11-3 record and 2.87 ERA as UNC’s Friday starter. He had 99 strikeouts across 97 ⅓ innings pitched, keeping UNC’s season alive in the Chapel Hill Super Regional with a shutout against USC. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound righty had a 3.46 ERA and 26-7 record with the Tar Heels.
A big-game pitcher for the Tar Heels, DeCaro started his career as a 17-year-old player who was thrust into a starting role as a freshman. He had more than 200 innings of work at UNC and consistently threw strikes, even though there’s plenty of room for improvement with his velocity and overall development. DeCaro projects as an eventual starter at the next level.
