UNC baseball’s Owen Hull was selected by the Boston Red Sox with the No. 67 overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft on Saturday, July 11.
Hull will join teammate Jake Schaffner, who was selected at No. 20, in New England. The Tar Heels had two players selected by the same team in the first three rounds for the first time since 2019. That year, Dustin Ackley (2), Alex White (15) and Kyle Seager (82) were picked by the Seattle Mariners.
A junior outfielder and George Mason transfer, Hull is the latest center fielder to continue a recent trend for the Tar Heels, who had Vance Honeycutt taken at No. 22 in 2024 and Kane Kepley selected at No. 56 in 2025. Hull’s projected slot value at No. 67 is $1.32 million.

Hull entered the “O Zone” as the Tar Heels’ best offensive player this season, leading the team in batting average (.393), OPS (1.115) and RBIs (87). A starter in all 69 games as a center fielder, Hull became a postseason star with a .479 average and 12 RBIs across 12 games in the NCAA Tournament. His walk-off double sent UNC to the College World Series.
A physical, athletic, confident hitter, Hull carries swagger to the plate in every appearance. Despite a slow start to his one-and-done season in Chapel Hill, Hull adjusted and became one of the top hitters in college baseball. He’s still a bit raw as a defender in the outfield, but his speed helps him and he possesses all of the tools to be a productive player.
