Mar. 4—Who: No. 1 seed Mayo vs. No. 3 seed Lakeville North.

Where, when: Mayo Civic Arena, 6 p.m. Thursday.

Records, rankings: Mayo is 27-1 and ranked fifth in Class 4A. Lakeville North is 15-13 and unranked.

Repeat: The teams also met in last year's final with Mayo trying a half-court buzzer beater that would have won it for the Spartans. It didn't go in, and it was Lakeville North emerging with a 63-62 win, advancing it to state.

Mayo's edge: Mayo, which is 27-1 and ranked fifth in the state, has plenty on their side. The teams have met once already this season. Mayo beat Lakeville North 60-50 on Jan. 17. Mayo, which is looking to get to state for the first time since 2015, rode 17 points by sophomore forward Maggie Dyer and 11 from sophomore guard Amelia Mills to the win. Sophomore guard Lauren Robison had 19 points for Lakeville North. Star 6-foot-4 sophomore center Sahara Wilson was held to nine.

Mayo's strengths: The Spartans are fielding their best and fastest team in years, and one also full of depth. Mayo gets great play from its two star sophomores, Amelia Mills (21.5 ppg., 40% 3-pointers, 3.3 steals, 3.1 assists) and Maggie Dyer (18.3 ppg., 35% on 3-pointers, 7.8 rpg.). It also gets a lot from senior guard Mia Banks (13.1 ppg., 40% on 3-pointers, 5 rpg.) and guard Madalynn McLaughlin adds 10.8 ppg., 3.4 assists and 2.3 steals). Mayo turns teams over an average of 21 times per game with its full-court, person-to-person defense.

Lakeville North's strengths: Six-foot-4 center Saraha Wilson is one of the more coveted recruits in the state and Minnesota has already offered her. Wilson is second on the team in scoring at 12.6 ppg. Lauren Robison is the team's leading scorer at 15.8 ppg. Lakeville North has a towering front line with three starters 6-2 or better.

Who: No. 1 seed Stewartville vs. No. 2 seed Byron.

Where, when: Mayo Civic Arena, 8 p.m. Thursday.

Records, rankings: Stewartville is 26-1 and ranked second in Class 3A. Byron is 21-7 and unranked.

Repeat: The same two teams also met in last year's section final. Stewartville won that one in overtime, 68-64. The Tigers have reached the state tournament three straight years and finished second in 2023.

Stewartville's edge: Based on records, rankings and previous meetings this season, Stewartville seems in good shape. The Tigers beat Byron 76-58 on Jan. 23 and 82-51 on Feb. 17. In the most recent meeting, last year's Post Bulletin All-Area Player of the Year Audrey Shindelar scored 27 points and fellow future Division I player Jayci Rath had 17 and four 3-pointers. Stewartville finished with 12 3-pointers in the game.

Stewartville's strengths: The Tigers' biggest strength might be that they have no apparent weakness. They defend well, they score in droves and they get contributions from a pack of players. Seniors Audrey Shindelar and Jayci Rath are the team's top two players. The 5-foot-11 Shindelar averages 23 points on 57% field-goal shooting, including a rare 50% on 3-pointers. She also averages 4 assists, 7 rebounds and 2 steals per game. Six-foot-1 forward Jayci Rath averages 12.5 ppg. and is shooting 49% from the field, including 43% on 3's. She also averages seven rebounds and 4 assists per game. The Tigers have also gotten a big boost from emerging 6-foot sophomore point guard Danika Shindelar (12 ppg., 51% field goals, 40% 3-pointers, 7 apg., 5 rpg., 2 spg.).

Byron's strengths: The Bears have a clear No. 1 player on their team, 5-foot-11 guard Madison Ohm. The senior will play next year at Division I Marist University in New York. Ohm is averaging 22 ppg. (48% field-goal shooting) and is also a top rebounder and defender (5.7 rpg., 3 spg.). Freshman Raegen Kelm is second on the team in scoring at 12.1 ppg. and shooting 48% on 2-pointers. Kayla Stork provides excellent pass-first point guard play for the Bears as well as close to 8 ppg. Stork averages 5.5 assists and 4.5 rebounds. She's shooting 45% from the field.

Who: No. 1 seed Red Wing vs. No. 2 Lourdes.

Where, when: Mayo Civic Auditorium, 8 p.m.

Records, rankings: Red Wing is 25-4 and ranked third in Class 2A. Lourdes is 23-6 and ranked sixth.

Red Wing's move: The Wingers, with decreasing enrollment, have moved down from Class 3A to 2A this season. Last season Red Wing was barely edged by eventual Section 1, Class 3A champion Stewartville 52-50 in the section semifinals.

Red Wing's edge: The Wingers beat Lourdes 68-57 on Jan. 6 in the teams' only meeting this season. Hallie Johnson and Finley Kamps each had 19 points in that one. Amelia Truty scored 20 for Lourdes.

Red Wing's strengths: Izzy Guetzlaff is the team's top player. The Northern State University commit is averaging 16 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals per game and is the team's leader. Alexa Guetzlaff averages 10.5 ppg., Finley Kamps 10.3 and Hallie Johnson 10.1. Johnson also collects 6.9 rebounds per game. Nora Hanson is a defensive force at the top of Red Wing's 1-2-2 zone defense and gets nearly four steals per game.

Lourdes' strengths: The Eagles have a three-headed force in senior forward Lauren Hust, junior guard Aaliyah Wiliams and eighth-grade guard Amelia Truty. Hust averages 19.2 points, 11.3 rebounds., 2.5 assists and 2.6 steals per game. Williams, a slick and strong point guard, averages 14 points, 6.5 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 3.4 steals per game. And Truty is one of the top scoring young players in the state. The eighth-grader averages 19.7 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 1.5 steals.

Who: No. 1 seed NRHEG vs. No. 2 Hayfield/Schaeffer Academy.

Where, when: Mayo Civic Auditorium, 5:30 p.m.

Records, rankings: NRHEG is 26-3 and ranked fifth in Class 1A. Hayfield/SA is 22-7 and unranked.

NRHEG on a roll: The Panthers have won 26 of their last 27 games. That includes a 56-53 win over Hayfield/SA on Feb. 6 and a 78-35 win over the Vikings on Feb. 14. In the latter win, 5-foot-11 star point guard Camryn VanMaldeghem scored 40 points, hitting five 3-pointers along the way. Hayfield/SA was led by Lily Morrisey with 12 points.

NRHEG's strengths: Camryn VanMaldeghem is its clear No. 1 player. She's scoring a whopping 30.3 points per game. But she does plenty more, too, such as 8 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 4.5 steals per game. Gabby Schlaak is averaging 11.3 points, 5 rebounds and 2.2 steals and Quinn VanMaldeghem is at 11.2 points, 15 rebounds, 4.5 steals and 6.3 steals per game. NRHEG is a great rebounding team, with four of its players averaging 4.5 rebounds or better, led by Quinn VanMaldeghem's massive 15 per game.

Hayfield/Schaeffer Academy strengths: Six-foot center Lily Morrisey has been the Vikings' top all-around player. The senior is averaging 17.9 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 3.7 blocked shots per game. She will play her college basketball at Bethel University next year. Betsy Gillette had been the team's second most productive player but her 14.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.9 steals were lost to a season-ending injury. Jenna Christopherson is averaging 11.9 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2 steals, and Maggie Hansen 9.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4 assists and 1.1 steals.
