Barry Trotz, the Nashville Predators' first coach, returned to the franchise on Feb. 27, 2023, as general manager. Three years later, during a news conference Feb. 2, he announced he was stepping down and retiring.
David Poile, the first general manager in franchise history, announced on Feb. 26, 2023, that he was retiring. That meant Trotz was just the second person to be GM of the Predators. Poile remained in the position until the end of 2023, when Trotz officially took over.
Here is everything you need to know about Barry Trotz:
Barry Trotz, a native of Dauphin, Manitoba, was named coach of the newly established Nashville Predators on Aug. 6, 1997. Poile, who had been the longtime Washington Capitals general manager, gave Trotz his first head coaching position as the Predators played their first game on Oct. 10, 1998.
In his first season, Trotz led the Predators to 28 wins, at the time the third-highest for an expansion team.
The Predators fired Trotz on April 14, 2014, after 15 seasons. Poile called it the "toughest decision" of his career as a general manager.
Trotz became just the 10th head coach in NHL history to coach 750 games with a single team, and the 31st to reach that mark overall.
After being relieved of his coaching duties, Trotz was offered a position in the franchise's hockey operations department, which he declined.
Barry Trotz is 63. His birthday is July 15, 1962.
Trotz was 35 when he became the Predators' coach and 60 when he returned as general manager.
As the only coach in the club's history before his departure in 2014, Trotz compiled a 551-479-60-100 record in 15 seasons.
During his tenure, the Predators made the Stanley Cup playoffs seven times (2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012).
After he became the Predators' general manager, they posted a 47-30-5 record in 2023-24 and earned a playoff berth as a wild card in the Western Conference. They lost to the Vancouver Canucks in the first round.
In the second season with Trotz as the GM, the Predators went 30-44-8 and missed the playoffs.
The team is 25-23-6 (56 points) and four points out of the final wild-card spot.
So Trotz's career record as the Predators' GM is 99-76-19.
After his departure from the Predators in 2014, Trotz became coach of the Washington Capitals, where he had been a scout (1987-91). He coached the Capitals to their first Stanley Cup championship in the 2017-18 season, defeating the Vegas Golden Knights in five games.
In 2018, Trotz became the New York Islanders coach and remained in that role until 2022. His next move was back to Nashville as the Predators' GM.
In 23 seasons combined with the Predators, Capitals and Islanders, Trotz is 914-670-168.
