The No. 8 Angelo State softball team earned its 19th NCAA Tournament berth on Monday, getting the third seed in the South Central regional.

The Rambelle’s third seed is their highest position in the South Central region since 2021, where they were also ranked third nationally. They fall behind No. 1 UT Tyler and No. 3 West Texas A&M in the region, with the two teams serving as hosts.

Awaiting the Rambelles in Canyon, Texas, for the tournament's opening round is sixth-seed Colorado Mesa at 5 p.m. Thursday.

How did they get here?

The Rambelles finished the season with a 44-12 overall record and 34-10 record in Lone Star Conference play, earning the third seed in the LSC tournament.

ASU faced off against Eastern New Mexico University in the first round of the tournament, winning 5-1 behind a quick start and solo home run from Lauren De La Cruz.

Awaiting the Rambelles in the second round was the nation’s top-ranked team, UT Tyler.

Despite a hot 4-1 start from Angelo State, the Patriots' five-run fifth inning was too much for the Rambelles to overcome as they fell 6-4. Despite losing in the semifinal round, the Rambelles’ impressive regular season record and postseason performance earned them the third seed in the South Central rankings.

LSC Awards

Seven Rambelles saw seven all-conference honors. Cheyenne Floyd, Laylonna Applin, Tatiana Trotter and Averie Gunther were named to the All-LSC First Team, while Ashton McMillan earned second-team honors.

Floyd was named to the All-Academic team, and Trotter earned the Golden Glove honors.

2025 was Floyd’s second consecutive season as she improved upon a campaign where she was named the conference’s pitcher of the year in 2024. She has struck out eight or more batters in 10 appearances this season and has thrown two no-hitters. In 161⅔ innings pitched, she had a 1.69 Earned Run Average and 179 strikeouts with a 25-6 record in 33 appearances.

After earning All-LSC Third Team and All-Freshman Team selections last season, Applin made her mark as the Rambelles’ full-time shortstop in 2025 and is putting together one of the best seasons in program history. She is hitting .436 at the plate with a .866 slugging percentage and a .510 on-base percentage.

If the season ended today, Applin's season would rank in the top five in program history: batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, triples, and total bases.

Scouting the competition

Colorado Mesa is 39-15 on the season and is 35-9 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. They made the RMAC Tournament finals before falling 6-0 to the champions, Colorado Christian.

The Mavericks are hitting .309 as a team, with a .501 slugging percentage and a .390 on-base percentage, averaging 6.3 runs per game. Their pitching staff has a .277 ERA and has struck out 278 batters in 363 1/3 innings.

Myah Arrieta leads the team with a .408 average, 18 home runs, 61 RBIs, and a .502 on-base percentage.

The Mavericks ace pitcher is Preslee Christensen and leads the team with a 2.08 ERA and a .224, while redshirt freshman Jessalyn Gallegos leads CMU with an 18-4 record and 157 strikeouts in 162⅓ innings tossed.

The Rambelles are 7-2 all-time against the Mavericks and 2-1 in the NCAA Tournament. They last met in the postseason in 2021, when the Mavericks defeated ASU 9-2 in the regional.

ASU defeated CMU 6-1 on opening weekend. Applin went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and McMillan delivered a two-run, pinch-hit double in the sixth inning to clinch the victory. Gallegos, in relief, threw the final 6⅔ innings, allowing five hits and three runs while recording seven strikeouts.
