The ongoing saga involving Kawhi Leonard continues to hover over the league, as more and more details come out on the situation.
For those unaware, the Kawhi Leonard probe centers on whether the LA Clippers secretly bypassed the NBA’s salary cap to pay him extra money.
The league launched an investigation into allegations that Leonard received off-the-books compensation, including a lucrative endorsement deal connected to team owner Steve Ballmer’s business ties.
Both the team and Leonard have denied any wrongdoing, but the ongoing inquiry has put everything on hold. That includes a massive proposed trade that would send Leonard back to the Toronto Raptors, since any league penalties or contract issues could carry over to his new team if the NBA finds a violation.
Adam Silver remains level-headed about the Kawhi Leonard investigation
ESPN have given the lowdown on what’s going on with the probe into the Kawhi Leonard situation and it looks as if we won’t be seeing a resolution anytime soon.
If the NBA tries to punish the Clippers without solid proof, the players’ union won’t hesitate to take things to arbitration.
The Clippers have denied these claims for nearly ten months, insisting they never routed payments to Leonard through Aspiration, and they’ve made it clear they are ready to battle this to the end.
As for Adam Silver, people who have worked with him for years say he won’t be swayed by outside noise. Ignore clear proof and it looks like a cover-up or issue a penalty without real evidence and it looks like an abuse of power. That’s why those close to him expect him to call it strictly by the book.
