On Friday afternoon, it was reported that the Toronto Blue Jays were to set to officially promote top prospect Sean Keys, who has been on a tear in the minor leagues this season.
He needs to be put on both the 40-man and 26-man rosters, so he was not on the roster yet for Friday's game against the Texas Rangers. Those moves will probably happen on Saturday for game two of the series.
The 22-year-old was a fourth-round pick of the Blue Jays in 2024 out of Bucknell who spent all of 2025 at High-A Vancouver. With Vancouver, he hit just .217 but posted a .365 on-base percentage, also hitting 22 doubles and 19 homers.
This season, he's hitting .284 at a combination of Double-A and Triple-A with a robust .409 on-base percentage. He's hit 21 homers and brought in 54 runs. He also has 14 doubles. He's currently ranked as the No. 14 prospect in the organization by MLB Pipeline.
As noted by Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet, Keys will not have to learn a new position in the major leagues. He will likely see some time at designated hitter, with George Springer moving from DH to the outfield, at least a handful of days a week. Keys can also play first base or third base when Vladimir Guerrero Jr. or Kazuma Okamoto need a day off.
We are still at least one month away from this, but it's something we've brought up before: What could the impact of Anthony Santander be on the entire roster?
Currently working back from offseason labrum surgery (left), Santander is under contract on a five-year deal. If and when he's ready to return, he will, and he will occupy a roster spot. Santander and Springer are both DH and OF candidates, so there wouldn't be any room for Keys in that scenario.
However, a lot can happen in the next month. Does Keys make himself indispensable? Does Santander actually make it back? Does someone else get hurt, making all of this moot?
The Blue Jays and Rangers will play on Saturday at 3:07 p.m. ET with Dylan Cease taking the mound for Toronto. Signed to a seven-year deal this offseason, he's gone 4-3 with a 2.75 ERA. A strikeout machine, he's already fanned 118 batters this season despite a 15-day stretch on the injured list.

What you need to know

What's the plan?

Sean Keys has split time between 3B/1B since college; Blue Jays won't ask him to learn a new position in the majors.
One way they'll fit him in is by having George Springer play OF 1-2 times per week. Springer last played OF in Sept '25 but has been getting pre-game reps of late
