LAWRENCE — As Bill Self reflected Wednesday on the run the Kansas basketball alumni team was making in The Basketball Tournament, he did so before JHX Hoops suffered a 78-65 defeat against La Familia.
JHX Hoops, KU’s team, lost in the finals of the alumni portion of the bracket against La Familia, Kentucky’s team. The defeat ended a run that saw JHX Hoops eliminate both Kansas State’s alumni team and Wichita State’s before reaching that point. JHX Hoops just fell short of being able to play for the TBT’s $2 million prize, set to go to the winner of the matchup between the winner of the alumni side of the bracket and the winner of the non-alumni side of the bracket.
But Self, who coaches Kansas basketball, did provide some insight into JHX Hoops’ TBT run that remains worthwhile to dive into. Self, who coached Sherron Collins and Tyshawn Taylor when they played at KU, followed what the alumni team was able to accomplish this year. Collins was listed as the team’s head coach on the TBT website, while Taylor was listed as a player/GM/owner.

Here are a few takeaways from what Self had to say:
Self, discussing JHX Hoops’ run to the finals of the alumni side of the TBT bracket, praised how hard those players were trying and said he was proud of them. He thought the team played poorly in the first game of a three-game series against Kansas State’s alumni team, in a loss, before finding a way to win the second game and take the series in the third. That set up what would be, more so for what happened after the game, a game against Wichita State’s alumni team that won’t soon be forgotten.
Following JHX Hoops’ win in the semifinals of the alumni side of the TBT bracket against the AfterShocks, Wichita State’s alumni team, chaos ensued, and altercations unfolded. It led to the TBT announcing that Marcus Keene, a player for the AfterShocks, would be indefinitely suspended from TBT events. From Self’s perspective, the entire game was odd.
There was also an in-game altercation after two players got tied up, which saw numerous players being ejected. The broadcast detailed how some players weren’t allowed to continue in the game because they left the bench. Regarding what happened after the game, Self called it ridiculous and uncalled for.
Self said the most impressive player on JHX Hoops at that point might have been Jacob Hanna, who played in college at Washburn, because Hanna plays the game the right way — to win, regardless of the situation. Self also praised how Billy Preston and Carlton Bragg Jr. both adapted to doing what was best in order for the team to be in a position to win games. Self was also high on what Zeke Mayo and Frank Mason III did to that point, and hopes that the run the team went on intrigues more former Jayhawks in the future to be a part of the team, too.
