What Joe Mazzulla Said About Potential Celtics/Knicks Playoff Rematch originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Celtics and New York Knicks may be on another postseason collision course after Thursday night's matchup.
New York escaped Madison Square Garden with a 112-106 victory over Boston. Thursday's outcome increases the odds that the Eastern Conference rivals will meet again.
Although they fell short of clinching the No. 2 seed, the Celtics remain two games ahead of the Knicks with two games remaining for each squad. The Knicks moved one game ahead of the Cleveland Cavaliers for the No. 3 spot, which could mean a second-round encounter for the second straight postseason.
Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla wouldn't offer any bulletin-board material when asked after Thursday's loss if he wants a playoff rematch against the Knicks.
"I’ll take whoever we gotta go through," Mazzulla said, per Bobby Krivitsky of Forbes. "We don't get to pick that. We don't get to choose. So, whatever we got to do to get to where we want to get to, we'll do."
The Celtics may crave revenge from last year, as the Knicks thwarted their championship defense in a six-game series. Making matters worse, Jayson Tatum tore his Achilles tendon late in a Game 4 loss at New York.
New York won three of four regular-season clashes with Boston, but those results probably shouldn't scare Mazzulla. Jaylen Brown sat out on Thursday, so he and Tatum didn't play together in any of those games.
The Celtics can secure the Atlantic division and No. 2 seed by defeating the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday night.
