The number one bullet point under prohibited items on the Masters website isn't guns or knives. Not alcohol or large purses.
The top item prohibited at the Masters: Cell phones.
"Part of what makes the Masters such a unique environment is the lack of cell phones on the grounds," the tournament's website reads. "Courtesy phones are available throughout the course."
The tournament also includes the following devices that it prohibits:
"Electronic devices (Cell Phones, Laptops, Tablets, Beepers, Drones and other electronics), including devices capable of transmitting photo/video*," the tournament's site reads.
The asterisk says that fitness bands and electronic watches are allowed.
But those cell phones, don't even think about having one on you. You will be asked to leave, and likely to never return.
Former British Open champion Mark Calcavecchia found out the hard way Tuesday when he was removed for cell phone use.
Here's why Augusta National is so strict.
The Masters tournament likes to keep a bit of nostalgia and mystique to its tournament. It's the same reason you can't buy merchandise anywhere else outside the patron shop.
You get to be there, you get to experience one of the most unique sporting events on the planet.
The tournament doesn't want every inch of its grounds photographed or videoed. It wants the mystery to remain.
It also likes the old-fashioned style of the game, when people were focused on the golf and not glued to their phones. If you're at the Masters, you're watching the tournament. You're not trying to scramble for a spot nearest the golfers where you can film their shot, or the golfer's conversation with their caddie.
It all keeps the charm, allure and glamour of the best major in the game.
Yes, the Masters offers several free phone banks where you can make a call. There are phones available at the north and south gates, and a couple banks throughout the course.
Absolutely not. The media is allowed to have cell phones in the press building, but there are signs reminding media members to leave cell phones inside before heading to the course.
Cell phones are strictly prohibited for everyone stepping foot on the course. Except, of course, the players some times.
During practice rounds, cameras are allowed. But they must be handheld and can not be cell phone photos.
Cameras are strictly prohibited on tournament days (Thursday - Sunday), but allowed during practice rounds (Monday-Wednesday).
