AUGUSTA, Ga. — Mark Calcavecchia is a major champion, winning the 1989 British Open. He has 13 PGA Tour victories to his credit and four wins on the PGA Tour Champions. And he has represented the United States on four Ryder Cups.
But that was not enough to prevent the Jupiter resident from being removed from the Masters on April 8.
Calcavecchia was kicked out of Augusta National Golf Club, according to Golfweek, for violating the no-phone policy. Calcavecchia was caught by security using his cell phone.
Calcavecchia, 65, did not get into any specifics but he also did not deny he was removed from the course during a phone conversation with Golfweek.
“I’ve got nothing negative to say about Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters, so I think we should literally hang up right now,” said Calcavecchia, who played in 18 Masters and was runner-up in 1988. He had 10 top 25 finishes and has earned $675,446 in prize money from playing in the Masters.
The incident happened on the day of the Masters Par 3 contest.
The Masters prohibits cell phones, laptops, tablets and two-way pagers inside the gates. The policy is to maintain a traditional, distraction-free environment, prevent noise interruptions for players, and ensure patrons are fully immersed in the experience. The rules are strictly enforced by security.
