Hey Commanders’ fans, you have one position where you feel the team is in the greatest need. Which position do you name?

All through the draft and the week following the draft, the vast majority of Commanders’ fans have been answering the question with “defensive end to seal the edge and rush the passer.”

ESPN has a very influential analyst, Aaron Schatz. Schatz is the creator of DVOA and DYAR, two metrics that are used heavily across the NFL. Working in NFL analytics for twenty years, Schatz has the attention of many in the NFL.

Thursday, Schatz published his latest ESPN column, explaining what is the weakest position of need for each of the NFL 32 teams. Of note, for Washington, Schatz did not declare defensive end. Instead, Schatz is clear he wholeheartedly believes the Commanders’ weakest position room is linebacker.

What was the rationale of Schatz's conclusion?

It's a good thing the Commanders rarely play base defense (only 13% of the time last season), because their linebacker depth is terrible. There will be problems if Frankie Luvu or Bobby Wagner suffer an injury, as the backups are second-year players who were fifth-round picks: Dominique Hampton and Jordan Magee. Hampton didn't play a defensive snap last season, while Magee played only 15. The Commanders also added Kain Medrano in the sixth round.

Everything I read depicted Medrano as a tremendous athlete who is a weak and ineffective tackler. Drafting a linebacker who can’t tackle could turn out to be a big deal, seeing that the Commanders don't play flag football.

Depth is a concern because Bobby Wagner turns 35 in June, and the other starter, Frankie Luvu, will turn 29 in September. Nick Bellore is already 35 and is strictly a special-teams player.

Jacob Martin is another free agent that GM Adam Peters signed this offseason. Martin (29) is someone Peters signed to rush the passer. At 6-foot-2, 242 pounds, Martin will most likely only play in passing situations.

The coaches were very high on 2024 fifth-round pick Jordan Magee, but injuries kept him off the field most of the year. On the other hand, Dominique Hampton was converted from safety to linebacker and then spent the season on the practice squad for all but one game.

It’s highly unlikely that both Wagner and Luvu will go through a second consecutive season with little to no injury. Therefore, coach Dan Quinn and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt are both looking to and expecting much more from Magee and Hampton in 2025.
