Brandon Aiyuk has done it again.
The disgruntled San Francisco 49ers receiver has for months posted illogical, unreasonable statements and/or actions on social media. Just when we all thought he had tired and things were therefore quieting down, Aiyuk struck again on Thursday.
Thursday, it became news that Aiyuk had purchased a property close to the Washington Commanders team facility in Ashburn, Virginia. Oh, but not simply a property, or not simply a home. No, word is, Aiyuk has purchased a $10M property. Keep in mind, the Commanders have not signed Aiyuk. Nor have the Commanders verbalized that they are going to sign Aiyuk.
Aiyuk has no guarantee a single NFL team is going to sign him to a contract for 2026. Yes, it is in the realm of possibility; however, with all of the strange, outrageous actions of Aiyuk this spring and summer, it has certainly raised flags for most NFL teams. Certainly, Aiyuk's actions have cost him financially. What NFL teams are going to risk a long-term contract?
Having said all of this, yes, someone may take a risk, but it logically would be of little consequence. Aiyuk may indeed get a one-year deal, which requires Aiyuk to prove he has not lost his mind and that he is indeed in football condition. But the real world is that Aiyuk has done another crazy thing. Who in their right mind would purchase a $10M property when he has absolutely no guarantee of a contract even paying this much?
Aiyuk signed a four-year, $120m contract extension with the 49ers back in 2024, before ending his season with a bad knee injury. The 49ers have stated Aiyuk broke the terms of his contract when he mysteriously began missing his rehabilitation appointments. Next, Aiyuk broke off communication with the 49ers. Aiyuk would have continued to be paid according to his contract; however, he irrationally chose to stop the rehab treatments and thus forfeited the benefits of his contract.
Aiyuk signed his 49ers contract; no doubt his agent explained to Aiyuk the 49ers would continue to pay him good money, as long as Aiyuk continued to show up to rehab his knee. Strangely, Aiyuk chose to forfeit big money for comfort. Now he has spent big money for a home in Loudoun County when he has no contract with Washington?
For months, he has been told what he must do for the 49ers to release him. Yet, Aiyuk stubbornly refuses to take responsibility for his choices during rehabilitation. He is childishly unwilling to do what he must do, just as he refused to do what he needed to do.
Is Aiyuk going to show up at Commanders training camp? Does he still not realize he is the property of the 49ers? Can you imagine the drama that could transpire if Aiyuk shows up for training camp in Ashburn? The Commanders are not going to mess around and get charged with tampering. What they might do is actually call law enforcement, hoping for a quick exit and a quick remedy for a very awkward situation.
Whatever occurs next, what is predictable is that Aiyuk will be blaming somebody else, playing the victim and making irrational decisions.
