The Toronto Blue Jays will not have right-hander Max Scherzer start Wednesday's game against the Boston Red Sox.

Earlier today, the AL East club announced that Scherzer was placed on the 15-day injured list with back spasms. Chad Dallas was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to take his roster spot.

This is another setback in what's surely been a frustrating season for the future Hall of Famer.

Scherzer spent several weeks on the IL with right forearm tendinitis and left ankle inflammation. He has made just six starts in 2026 and has a dreadful 10.23 ERA in 22 innings.

"It’s unclear how serious this issue is, but presumably it isn’t major. As he takes some time to try to get his body in a good spot, the Jays will have to proceed with an injury issue in the rotation yet again," Darragh McDonald of MLB Trade Rumors wrote. "They have been spinning plates with their starting group all season long."

Jose Berrios, Cody Ponce, and Bowden Francis are all out for the season. Shane Bieber has yet to make his season debut due to right elbow inflammation.

Those injuries have led to inconsistent play from the Blue Jays, placing them four games below .500 and 10 games behind the New York Yankees for first place in the AL East.
