In the first week of training camp for the Washington Commanders, it was a prevailing theme that the defense was ahead of the offense. Even wide receiver Terry McLaurin acknowledged as much. But with each passing day, Washington's offense, specifically quarterback Jayden Daniels, gets more comfortable.
There's no reason to panic. At all. It's often common for the defense to be ahead of the offense in the early stages of training camp. The Commanders are in a unique position, though, having a new offensive coordinator (David Blough) and a new defensive coordinator (Daronte Jones).
Instead of viewing each practice with a scorecard of who gains the upper hand, Washington views things differently. The defense is throwing a variety of looks at Daniels, some of which he has not seen before. That's great experience. It allows Blough to see how Daniels will react.
The Commanders went through wholesale changes on defense this offseason. Odafe Oweh, K'Lavon Chaisson, Charles Omenihu, Tim Settle, Leo Chenal, Sonny Styles, Amik Robertson, Nick Cross and Rasul Douglas are some of the newcomers in pivotal roles. Most notably, Washington's defense is younger and faster — a popular offseason theme.
What has Daniels seen from the Commanders' new defense?
"Guys are flying around, communicating, making it hard on us, and that's the challenge throughout camp," Daniels told Marshall Kramsky for WUSA Channel 9 in Washington, D.C.
"We're not really necessarily game planning versus each other; we're not going to play each other, but, you know, how hard can we make it on them? How hard can they make it on us? So, when we do go against somebody else, we've already seen that, or this scheme, we have answers for a lot of different things."
This is encouraging on multiple levels for the Commanders. They want to test Daniels in camp. Remember, he's also learning a new offense, while adjusting to playing under center more consistently. There will come a time this season that this summer experience will prove valuable.
It will be interesting to see how much Daniels plays in the preseason. He is certainly projected to see plenty of action in Washington's two joint practices, which are generally more valuable than the actual preseason games.
