Before Sunday, Chase DeLauter hadn’t faced live, in-game pitching in just over two weeks. His last at-bat before landing on the injured list was a base hit single off Taril Skubal on Saturday, June 13.

Leading up to the Cleveland Guardians' roster move to activate DeLauretis off the IL, there were questions about whether he needed a rehab assignment to get his timing back or if the team was rushing him back altogether.

However, the Guardians have needed a jolt of offense in their lineup, and DeLauter gave them just that in his first game, and he even played the late-game hero in Cleveland’s 5-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.

Cleveland had plenty of scoring opportunities throughout the game, but struggled to get that big hit to really break the game open. Once again, the Guardians set the table for a high-scoring inning when Brayan Rocchio singled and Cooper Ingle walked to get on base with no outs.

DeLauter stepped up to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded, and hit a perfectly placed ground ball right to the base, second base, and into the outfield, scoring both Ingle and Daniel Schneemann, and tying the game at four runs apiece.

This hit set the stage for Rhys Hoskins, who gave the Guardians their first lead of the game with a two-run double.

“Obviously, we've missed Chase, just like the other guys, but for him to come up in that clutch moment, it was pretty cool, and it looked like he hadn't missed a beat. Great at-bats all day,” said Cleveland skipper Stephen Vogt.

In terms of record and, yes, potential playoff implications, this win did a lot for the Guardians.

Cleveland’s win on Sunday also gave them the series victory over the Mariners, too. This could be crucial at the end of the year if both Seattle and Cleveland are in the postseason picture and finished with the same record.

More importantly, this victory was also a massive moral boost for the Guardians. It clinched their first series victory since losing Jose Ramirez, and doing so after trailing and facing self-inflicted adversity speaks volumes about this team's resilience.

Vogt even declared it, “as big a win as we’ve had all year.”

Now, it's time for Cleveland to build on Sunday's win and the series victory.
