Although Aaron Rodgers inked a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday, the consensus was that the 2026-27 season would be the 42-year-old signal-caller’s last.

On Wednesday, Rodgers confirmed that to be true, informing reporters that he’s set to retire from the big leagues after the upcoming campaign.

“Aaron Rodgers says ‘yes’ this is last year,” ESPN’s Brooke Pryor wrote on X/Twitter/

So, what does Rodgers’ late-May retirement announcement mean for the Steelers and their future? Well, it places greater emphasis on the franchise developing the younger QBs on its roster (Drew Allar or Will Howard), trading for a signal-caller with clear upside, or searching for the franchise QB via the 2027 NFL Draft.

Last Thursday, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler suggested that the Steelers could choose option No. 3.

“A few executives consulted for this story are watching Pittsburgh -- which has started seven quarterbacks since Ben Roethlisberger retired after the 2021 season -- for a move up the draft board to capitalize on a quarterback class it has spent years studying,” Fowler stated.

Fowler named LaNorris Sellers (South Carolina), C.J. Carr (Notre Dame), and Dante Moore (Oregon) as potential QBs that could pique the Steelers’ interest this season, which could prompt them to do whatever it takes to land one of them in the next rendition of the draft.

Needless to say, the Steelers will have their options as they prepare to navigate life without Rodgers in 2027-28 and beyond.
