Chaz Gray is the 18th commitment in Washington's 2027 class, pledging to Jedd Fisch and the Huskies on Tuesday afternoon following a visit to Montlake on May 29.

The 6-foot-4, 250-pound edge rusher from St. Joseph Regional (NJ) is the No. 438 player in the 247Sports Composite rankings, making him the top-rated recruit in Washington's class who does not qualify as a blue-chip recruit (although he's rated as a four-star by Rivals). The Huskies' top eight commitments - quarterback Blake Roskopf, wide receivers Tre Moore, Braylon Pope, and Dontay Tyson, defensive linemen Tevita Nonu and Jon Ioane, running back Jeremy Adeyanju, and safety Isala Aisa Wily-Ava are all four-star recruits in the composite rankings.

BREAKING: Four-Star EDGE Chaz Gray has Committed to Washington, he tells me for @Rivals

Gray chose Washington over offers from Tennessee, Clemson, and UCF, marking another major recruiting win for the Huskies after securing Moore over Miami and Ohio State and beating out Texas A&M for Tyson in recent weeks.

As a junior, Gray had 40 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks in 10 games for the eventual state champions. Despite that seemingly modest pass rush production and his bigger size for a high school player, Gray projects to remain on the outside in college, which is notable for the Huskies considering that many of their recent commitments on the defensive line have leaned more towards the interior.

That likely means that outside linebackers coach Aaron Van Horn sees Gray as a potential successor to senior Jacob Lane, the former Emerald Ridge standout who has grown into a starter for the Huskies. Lane could potentially return for a fifth season in 2027 if the NCAA's proposed five-for-five eligibility rule passes by the end of the season, but Washington would need someone to fill his shoes by 2028 at the latest.

Isaiah Ward and Russell Davis II are also on their final years of eligibility on the edge as of right now, which may end up leaving a big void at the position heading into 2027. Logan George, Devin Hyde, Ramzak Fruean, Hayden Moore, and Victor Sanchez Hernandez have remaining eligibility without rule changes and Gray will be joined by three-star Mater Dei (CA) rusher Matamatagi Uiagalelei as newcomers to the room. Uiagalelei may end up playing more of an interior role, similar to the one his brother Ta'ita'i Uiagalelei played for the Huskies in 2025.

Speaking of brothers, Gray's is a composite five-star recruit and the No. 1 linebacker in the class of 2028. Tahj Gray accompanied his older brother to Montlake for the visit on May 29, so Washington may now be very much in the mix to snag three New Jersey recruits in three cycles after signing quarterback Derek Zammit this season. Jedd Fisch and his staff have done well with brothers during their time on Montlake: Ward and his brother Anthony Ward both came over from Arizona, Uiagalelei committed to the Huskies after watching his older brother start for the team last season, offensive tackle Kodi Greene cited the ability to play with his brother - walk-on defensive back Kayden Greene - as a major reason he came to Washington, defensive tackle Derek Colman-Brusa had a similar story about his brother Lowen, an offensive lineman, and the Huskies have commitments from twin brother linebackers Ethan and Justin Coach from St. John Bosco (CA) in the class of 2027.

But the older Gray is an ascending player in his own right, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him and Desert Edge (AZ) wide receiver Zerek Sidney to earn their fourth stars and give Washington at least ten blue-chip recruits in Fisch's first follow-up from the best class in school history in the 2026 cycle.

In short: Washington has made obvious their commitment to recruiting the high school ranks, and it continues to pay off at the national level. Recent four-star defensive tackle visitor Sam LeJeune of Poplarville (MS) and upcoming four-star offensive line visitor DaJohn Yarborough of Basha (AZ) could continue that trend if the Huskies are able to reel them in after showing them what Montlake has to offer.
