The Washington Commanders were back on the practice field Wednesday for the first day of OTAs. That meant a healthy Jayden Daniels was back under center for Washington. Head coach Dan Quinn seemed excited about "spring ball" and watching his new-look team adapt to the brotherhood mindset that Quinn brought to Washington in 2024.
"I've been pleased with the team and their connection that they're building together," Quinn said on Wednesday. "And that happens in these times of spring ball and practices to go. And so, as they're building that, they're growing a connection, they're growing that type of brotherhood that you need to play well."
Of course, Daniels was a topic of conversation when reporters met with Quinn ahead of practice. Quinn has been around Daniels for a few weeks already this offseason, as Washington players reported for the start of the offseason program last month. Has Quinn noticed anything different with his third-year quarterback?
"I think the vocal part is a little bit been due to the nature of the offense to where there's more huddle, there's more time, there's more communication in this system from the quarterback to all the other guys," Quinn said.
"So, that part, I think I feel that. I wouldn't say it's more or less, but you'll hear him more, even as you're watching practice from the side, due to the nature of how we're doing things in and out of plays. So, I would say that's one different, but from the work ethic and him getting himself ready to play, man, that's one of his calling cards and so he's always one that's way out in front in that space."
This is an encouraging update from Quinn. It doesn't sound like much, but remember, the Commanders are installing a new offense under new coordinator David Blough. It's also the first time Blough has ever been a coordinator at any level. Communication is key. Daniels is being asked to play more under center. While that's not completely new to him, it's much different than what he's done over the last four seasons — two at LSU and two in the NFL. So, for him to be comfortable enough to be vocal already, that should be music to the ears of Washington's coaches.
The Commanders ran more no-huddle than any NFL team over the past two years, and it wasn't even close. While elements of that will remain, things will look much different. There will be more huddling, more pre-snap motion, and different personnel, so communication is critical. Daniels is already ahead of the game.
