One of the early takeaways from the Washington Commanders' OTAs recently was quarterback Jayden Daniels wearing a GoPro action camera on his helmet. Why would Daniels wear a GoPro? Was this something he wanted to do, or something the team wanted him to do?

Ahead of Tuesday's OTA practice in Ashburn, we got our answer.

Head coach Dan Quinn said it is the idea of new offensive coordinator David Blough.

"Yeah, so the GoPros came from David, and it definitely gives insight," Quinn said. "There's also volume on that. And so, hearing that microphone of what it could sound like in a huddle, what does the check look like? So, there's definitely advantages. It's not as effective for throws, like deeper down the field, so we're still exploring with it. But it gives another perspective in how to hear things. And so, as a coach, especially when you're on the sideline, hearing that type of communication back and forth. If it was just the video, that'd be good, but adding the sound with it, with the mic, I think that's another layer to it. So, we'll continue to work with it now and through the next week, and then we can decide what days, how we wanna work it."

Dan Quinn tells me putting GoPro cameras on quarterbacks’ helmets was David Blough’s idea. Quinn says the most valuable piece of these cameras may be the audio it picks up in the huddle. Today I also saw Frankie Luvu and Jeremy Reaves wearing a GoPro on their helmet pic.twitter.com/E3hZBboVjy

This is actually a great idea, so it's no surprise when we hear of how innovative Blough is. This is the perfect time of year for the quarterback to wear the GoPro. For one, you're installing a new offense, and with the footage, the coaches, specifically Blough, are seeing what Daniels is seeing. Therefore, they're speaking the same language when they review the footage.

Quinn noted how this will not be as helpful for deeper throws, which is true. But in Blough's offense, we could see more in-breaking routes, so adding the action camera is a great way for Daniels to go back and review. Did he miss something? Did he make the correct read? Or, most importantly, it could be used as a way to speed things up.
