Wenceel Pérez Heads to IL After Suffering Serious Injury

The Detroit Tigers received some positive news regarding outfielder Wenceel Pérez after a frightening injury earlier this week.

According to Jason Beck, Pérez remains in Houston while undergoing additional evaluation on his eye injury. The Tigers have placed him on the 10-day injured list.

While the injury is still considered serious, there is reason for optimism.

Beck reported that Pérez has suffered a left orbital fracture, but his eyesight is not believed to be in danger.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch also offered an encouraging update on Pérez’s condition.

“He’s in a good place. The swelling has started to go down,” Hinch said.

The 26-year-old outfielder has struggled offensively this season, hitting .180 with seven home runs, 17 RBIs, and a .594 OPS in 161 at-bats. Despite those numbers, Pérez remains an important piece of Detroit’s outfield depth and lineup flexibility because of his ability to switch-hit and play multiple positions.

For now, the Tigers will continue monitoring Pérez’s recovery while hoping the reduction in swelling is the first step toward a full return. The most important takeaway from Wednesday’s update is that, although the orbital fracture is significant, doctors do not currently believe his vision has been compromised.
