Howell’s Jack MacGregor and Pinckney’s Jaelyn Ray are well past the phase of trying to establish themselves as high school runners.

They’re now chasing their place in history.

The immensely talented sophomore distance runners both ran 3,200-meter times that rank second on their respective schools’ record boards Saturday during the Highland Games at Howell High School.

MacGregor won the boys event with a time of 9 minutes, 20.93 seconds. It’s the fastest 3,200 time by a Howell runner since David Mitter ran a school-record 9:09.96 to place fourth in the 2017 state Division 1 meet.

It was the fastest 3,200 run by a Livingston County sophomore, eclipsing the mark of 9:27.21 set by Brighton's Zach Stewart in 2018 at the Saline Golden Triangle meet. Hartland's Riley Hough, the fastest 3,200 runner in county history, didn't get a sophomore year because of the state's 2020 COVID shutdowns.

MacGregor also anchored the winning 3,200 relay team that included Drake Wallace, David DeLand and Lucas Wood. They ran 8:18.86, county’s fastest time this season.

Ray not only became just the second Pinckney girl to break 11 minutes in the 3,200, but her third-place time of 10:45.37 puts her third on the county’s all-time list.

Ray’s time puts her behind only Pinckney’s Noelle Adriaens, who ran 10:16.11 at the 2019 Saline Golden Triangle meet, and Brighton’s Allison Lunau, who ran 10:42.74 at the 2013 state Division 1 finals.

She was third in Saturday’s race behind a 10:14.70 from freshman Natasza Dudek and a 10:44.31 from junior Hana Boggess, who run for state Division 1 distance power Ann Arbor Pioneer.

Placing second for Pinckney were Mya Karolak with a leap of 4 feet, 10 inches in high jump and Nadia Jacobs with a pole vault height of 9-3.

Senior Madison Cooke and sophomore Davea Crowe had season-best performances for a county runner in two events. Cooke was third in the 200 in 26.14 and ran 12.93 in the 100 prelims.

Crowe was fifth in the 300 hurdles in 50.39 and seventh in the 100 hurdles in 17.19. Pinckney’s Maddie Karsies took fifth in the 3,200 in a personal-best 11:50.26.

In the boys meet, Howell senior Romen Williams was third in high jump with a leap of 6 feet, was fourth in the 110 hurdles in a county-best 15.68 and was sixth in the 300 hurdles in 42.95. Howell’s Ryder Stam was third in the 200 in 23.47.
