—Athlon has 11 Cardinals on its preseason All-ACC squad, including three on the First Team.

—It’s only July 1, but the CJ’s Alexis Cubit is already on the record with a 10-2 prediction for the Louisville football team in 2026. Included in those 10 wins is a week one upset of Ole Miss.

—The first 2027 NBA mock draft from ESPN’s Jeremy Woo has two Cardinals, Flory Bidunga and Obinna Ekezie, going in the second round.

—WDRB’s Eric Crawford penned the definitive tribute to Kenny Klein.

I turned around in the pew at the funeral and saw Eddie Gunter. He’s retired and works as a volunteer at basketball and football games for the sports information department, handing out credentials. If Eddie didn’t take care of me every time I forgot my pass, I’d have been fired long ago.

His wife has had some health setbacks, and he talked about Kenny texting him twice a week to check on her status.

“He was always checking in,” Gunter said. “He’s so busy and knows so many people, but here he’s texting me to see how things are.”

The night before the funeral, at dinner, Jody Demling pulled out his phone and showed us a text Kenny had sent while Jody lay in a hospital bed, unconscious, on a ventilator with COVID-19.

I thought about the texts Kenny sent me after my stroke in 2018. Or him showing up at the visitation when my mother died a couple of years ago.

I thought about the times he checked on Rick Bozich during a hospital stay.

All of those things were doubtless on our minds when we visited Kenny together for the last time in the hospital.

All of the text messages from Kenny that people have read to me over the past several days or posted on social media. All of the photos from all of the camera rolls.

After a while, you begin to wonder how Kenny ever found time to do the actual job everyone knew him for.

Then you realize those weren’t separate things. To Kenny, they were the job. It was all life, all the time.

—Why can’t college sports be fixed? The Athletic’s Austin Meek says just look at Michigan’s response to Dusty May’s exit.

Domenico Grasso, Michigan’s president, addressed the departure of men’s basketball coach Dusty May, whose decision to coach the Dallas Mavericks blindsided a lot of people in Ann Arbor. At Michigan and elsewhere, losing one of college basketball’s brightest minds was viewed as another canary in the increasingly toxic coal mine of college sports.

“Coach May told me that among his reasons for leaving were uncertainties and pressures involving the transfer portal and NIL support for student-athletes,” Grasso said. “He and I agreed that the future of college sports is headed in the wrong direction.”

In the next breath, Grasso voiced Michigan’s objections to the Protect College Sports Act, a bill that is intended to address those very problems. While acknowledging that college sports are in “dire need of clarity and equitable reform,” Grasso echoed the stance of the Big Ten and the SEC, which do not support the legislation.

“We want what’s best for the Big Ten and for Michigan,” Grasso said. “We are not going to sacrifice the competitive advantage that we have built for more than a century.”

—Sananda Fru had some interesting quotes in this story from the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

The 6-foot-11 Fru has now landed at Marquette, which the 22-year-old big man thinks is the right spot for him to take another big leap in his development.

“The biggest thing I was looking for was for a program – or more for a coach – that trusted me and my abilities,” Fru told the Journal Sentinel. “First of all, who cared about me as a player to develop, but also wants to push me the furthest, skill-set wise.

“I was really looking to have a big impact on the team, help as much as possible, but also be able to expand my game because I felt a little limited in my role, limited in the way I got used last season. So I was looking to have bigger usage. And then have a good bond with my coach, who really looked at you as a person more than a fixture or a player. So really looked at your personality.”Need a news break? Check out the all new PLAY hub with puzzles, games and more!

Fru found the right fit with Golden Eagles head coach Shaka Smart.

“I feel like most coaches in general, talking about the transfer portal, are looking for ‘Oh, this player fits this position, he can help me here, this player can do that,’ ” Fru said. “But he was about you as a person.

“What is important to you. How you think. The way you think. And how do you fit on my team, not only as a basketball player but also as a person. As a human being.”
