I think you're missing the point. You can't give Monti "one more season" unless Gannon comes back because GMs don't get to go out and pick a whole new coaching staff only to be fired the next season. It's not what happens. So, if the thought behind the scenes is to give Monti a make-or-break year, you pretty much have to keep Gannon, which would be moronic.

Basically, the choices are to keep Gannon and Monti, fire Gannon but keep Monti long-term with a new coaching staff, or clean house. There's really only one sane choice, considering the current state of the Cards.

I disagree that this is not an extremely risky proposition. GMs want to pick their HCs. They want to pick their QBS. HCs want to pick their QBs.

Expecting that not to be the case makes an already bad professional environment, worse.

I do support Monti. I think everything I wrote is possible. Recent history 2025 Jax GM Pederson fired HC Baalke retained (fired later). Also Titans GM Carthon fired and HC Callahan retained. Not NFL common sense, really?

Besides K9's reply, you couched it as a norm in the NFL. Would you agree that, by far, what you posit is less frequent than tying the coach and GM together?

I’d say the move to Graves resulted in a Super Bowl appearance and the move to Keim resulted in the longest period of sustained success in my time as a fan.

In 2012 Keim was named Director of Player Personnel. The Cards went 5-11. They did have 3 successful years after that. The key was a once in a lifetime fluke. Arians, who was the 2012 Coach of the Year when he replaced an ill Chuck Pagano, was available in 2013 and hired. How often do you get a chance to hire the reigning Coach of the Year? Keim does get credit for trading for Palmer. Arians faded after that Keim hired Wilks and Kingsbury. He drafted Murray. I give the Cards’ success to Arians, not Keim or Kingsbury. I can’t believe you mentioned Graves. In his first 3 years the Cards his most wins were 5. In 10 years he had 2 winning records. Both with Warner. The Super Bowl year was 9-7. You can make a fairly good argument that Warner was brought in more to mentor Leinart than lead the Cards to a Super Bowl. Graves was widely regarded as a GM failure, again never having a winning record after Warner resigned.
