Tiger Woods sat quietly, save for a case of the hiccups, while handcuffed in the back seat of a police car in video of his arrest after a car crash near his Jupiter Island, Florida home on March 27.
Wearing a blue golf shirt branded with his logo, the 50-year-old golf star said nothing in a 17-minute video released April 2 by the Martin County Sheriff's Office and obtained by TCPalm, part of the USA TODAY Network. Woods can be seen yawning occasionally and at one point seems to fall asleep while a deputy drives him to Martin County Jail.
Woods was charged with suspicion of DUI and refusing to submit to a drug test after sheriff's officials said he crashed into a trailer being hauled by a pickup truck about 2 p.m. Friday, March 27. Woods was described in an arrest affidavit as having bloodshot eyes with "extremely dilated" pupils and was found to have two pills of hydrocodone, a prescription painkiller, in his pocket.
Woods waived an arraignment hearing and pleaded not guilty to his charges, according to paperwork filed by his attorney, Douglas Duncan. He requested a jury trial.
According to an arrest affidavit, Woods told officers at the scene that he was looking down at his phone and changing the radio station and didn't see the truck in front of him on South Beach Road slow down to turn. He swerved into the other lane to avoid the vehicle and clipped the bumper of the trailer, causing his black Land Rover to slide on the driver's side of the road. Woods crawled out of the passenger's side of his vehicle. No injuries were reported.
Woods was taken to the Martin County Jail and took a breathalyzer test but refused to take a urine test. He was released from jail after 11 p.m. that night and was driven home in a private vehicle.
Woods was recovering from two surgeries that prevented him from playing in the PGA Tour in 2025 in hopes of returning for the Masters, which begins April 9. A few hours after entering his not-guilty pleas March 31, Woods announced on social media that he would step away from golf "to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery." PGA of America also announced Woods would not captain the 2027 Ryder Cup team.
On April 1, he received permission from a judge to leave the country to receive "comprehensive inpatient treatment."
