Chris Wilder has accused Burnley stewards of failing to protect his Sheffield United players after on-pitch confrontations with Burnley fans at Turf Moor.

Home supporters invaded the pitch after their side sealed promotion to the Premier League with the 2-1 win over Wilder’s team, who were approached as they left the pitch.

Hamza Choudhury, in particular, was infuriated after Burnley players, led by CJ Egan-Riley, celebrated next to him as he headed towards the tunnel.

Later, as Sheffield United players boarded the bus, they were confronted by home fans with verbal abuse as a metal barrier between the supporters and the vehicle.

“We were told by the referee before that we would get stewards surrounding us, but I think they went on the missing list,” said Wilder. “It was quite scary out there in the end, people coming and doing bits and pieces.

“Understandable that emotions are running high, but I don’t think we got protected by the football club and stewards one bit. There referee notices that as well.”

Wilder’s side had been in the box seat for automatic promotion to the Premier League before a run of four defeats in five matches during April, with Burnley and Leeds picking up points that sealed places in the top two.

Sheffield United, who also had two points deducted this season for defaulting on payments in 2022/23, now face the Championship play-offs in their bid to return to the Premier League at the second time of asking.

“There will be some big games now. The home game [of the play-offs] at Bramall Lane will be off the scale. We’ve got to dust ourselves down and go again and we will do that,” added Wilder. “We want to go and get 90-odd points, that’s the target.”
