Since Jon Gruden retired from coaching the NFL, he’s taken up a broadcasting role and started up a series called QB Class, with its newest episode staring Notre Dame’s Riley Leonard.
The former Super Bowl winning head coach loves the now former Irish quarterbacks game, immediately comparing his running style to that of former Auburn Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton. Gruden went over Leonard’s who career, starting out with his recruitment, which was significantly different than most. His only offer out of high school was from Duke, and he never actually made any visits.
The conversation continued with his tough start with the Blue Devils, going through a head coaching change there with former Irish assistant Mike Elko and how important that relationship was to his growth and development. The two also talked about Leonard’s time in South Bend, which was the highlight of the episode for me.
It was great hearing about his experience, how much it impacted him, and the fact that he grew so much from working with offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock running a pro-style offense. Check out the full episode of QB Class starring Riley Leonard below.
